ChatGPT as a Live Translator: What Works and What Doesn't
ChatGPT voice can interpret two people face to face on a phone, but it does not join Zoom, Meet or Teams. What works, a ready prompt, and what fits a call.
In short
- Yes, ChatGPT voice can translate speech in near real time, but only through the microphone and speaker of one phone, so it suits two people in the same room.
- It does not join Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams as a participant, so the people on the other end never hear its translation.
- For a video call, use a translator that sits inside the meeting: a platform feature if your plan has one, or a bot that joins the call.

Can ChatGPT translate in real time? Yes, on one phone
ChatGPT voice can interpret two people at one phone, turning speech into near-real-time translation. Since June 2025, open voice mode, name two languages, and it translates both directions until you stop. It cannot join Zoom, Google Meet or Teams because it has no way to hear each participant separately or send audio to them.
The key question: who hears the translation? In a call, the answer decides everything.
Yes, ChatGPT can translate in real time—but the catch is that only the people near the phone hear it. That works for two people in a room, but not for a video call where the other attendees are remote.
Where ChatGPT voice works and where it stops
Think of the audio path. ChatGPT voice listens through one microphone and talks through one speaker. Three situations follow from that.
Two people, one room: it works. A tutor and a student, a traveler and a shopkeeper, a visitor at a clinic desk. Both people hear the spoken translation from the same phone.
You alone in a video call: it half works. You can hold a second device near your speaker and hear a translation privately. Nobody else hears it, so you can follow the call but cannot answer in a way the others understand, unless you speak their language yourself. Echo and room noise make the recognition worse.
A group call: it does not work. There is no ChatGPT participant tile, no per-speaker audio, and no output into the meeting. ChatGPT record mode, which exists in the macOS app for some plans, transcribes a meeting for a summary afterwards. It is not live translation for attendees.
Some tools advertise "ChatGPT for Zoom". As of 7 October 2026 there is no official ChatGPT feature that joins a meeting. Such tools are usually a separate bot that calls a language model behind the scenes, which is a different product from the ChatGPT app.
One more thing to keep apart: in May 2026 OpenAI released a speech-to-speech translation model for developers. It lets other companies build translators, but it is not a button in the ChatGPT app.
A prompt for interpreter mode on your phone
If your situation is two people at one phone, this setup works better than saying "translate this".
- Open ChatGPT, tap the voice icon, and say the rule once: "You are an interpreter between English and Russian. Translate everything I say into Russian, and everything you hear in Russian into English. Say only the translation. Do not answer for anyone, add comments, or summarize."
- Ask for short turns: "If a sentence is long, wait for me to finish, then translate it whole. If you did not catch something, ask the speaker to repeat."
- Put the phone between you, mic side up, and pass it back only if the screen needs to be read.
- Say names, numbers and dates slowly. Check them back: "Repeat the time and the address in both languages."
The limits you will hit:
- Turn-taking. ChatGPT needs a pause to know a speaker has finished. People who talk over each other, or pause mid-sentence, get cut off or answered early.
- Noise. Cafes, streets and speakerphones lower recognition. Move somewhere quiet before you start.
- Drift. After a long session the assistant sometimes starts replying instead of translating. Repeat the rule when that happens.
- Privacy to you only. If the phone is on speaker, everyone near it hears the translation, including the parts you meant to keep private.
How a translated call goes

Mother (Russian-speaking)Занятие начинается в восемь утра?
Does the class start at eight in the morning?
| Said | Translation | |
|---|---|---|
| Mother (Russian-speaking) | Занятие начинается в восемь утра? | Does the class start at eight in the morning? |
| Volunteer English tutor | Yes, eight in the morning. Shall I send the link? | Да, в восемь утра. Прислать ссылку? |
| Mother (Russian-speaking) | Да, пришлите, пожалуйста. | Yes, please send it. |
| Volunteer English tutor | Done. See you on Friday. | Готово. До встречи в пятницу. |
ChatGPT, an in-call translator and captions compared
| ChatGPT voice mode | In-call translator | Captions only | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Joins the meeting | No | Yes, as a participant | Built into the platform |
| Everyone hears the translation | Only people near the phone | Yes, in their own language | No, text only |
| Handles several speakers | Poorly, one microphone | Yes, from the meeting audio | Yes |
| Spoken output | Yes, on the phone | Yes | No |
| Setup | Open the app, say a prompt | Paste the meeting link | Turn on in meeting settings |
| Best for | Two people in one room | Cross-language video calls | Reading along in a shared language pair |
Captions and spoken translation solve different problems. A reader can follow captions in a quiet office, while a listener on the road needs audio. The article on real-time voice translators explains the difference in detail.
What Copilot, Gemini and the meeting apps offer
The chat assistants from Microsoft and Google work like ChatGPT: they hear what their own microphone hears. The features that sit inside meetings are separate products, and each depends on your plan. Facts below are as of 7 October 2026.
- Google Meet. Gemini-powered speech translation reached general availability on 27 January 2026 for paid Workspace plans and Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, with an admin setting. Free personal accounts without those plans are left out. Compare this with Google Translate conversation mode, which has the same one-microphone limit as ChatGPT.
- Microsoft Teams. The Interpreter agent translates speech in meetings, and since January 2026 in calls, for users with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Microsoft lists 9 languages and a monthly allowance of 20 interpretation hours per user.
- Zoom. Voice Translator has been in beta since April 2026 with 5 languages (English, Chinese, French, Japanese, Spanish). Details are in our Zoom live translation guide.
If your plan or languages are not covered, or participants use different platforms, a bot such as Akume covers the gap. Akume joins Google Meet, Microsoft Teams or Zoom as a participant, shows live captions in the call, and anyone who opens the listener link in a browser (up to 500 connections, no install) hears the translation in their language. It supports 60+ languages and keeps no audio recording after the call. This comparison lays out the options side by side.
Which one to pick
- Two people, one room, a few minutes: ChatGPT voice with the prompt above.
- One person in a call who only needs to follow along: your platform's translated captions or speech translation, if your plan includes it.
- A group call where everyone should understand everyone: a translator that is a participant in the meeting.
Before a real meeting, run a short call and check that the translation reaches everyone.
Questions and answers
Can ChatGPT translate in real time?
Yes, in voice mode. Since June 2025 you can ask ChatGPT to translate between two languages, and it keeps interpreting both sides until you tell it to stop. It does this for what its own microphone hears, so it works best for two people sharing one phone.
Does ChatGPT voice work in Zoom, Google Meet or Teams?
Not as a call participant. ChatGPT has no official feature that joins a meeting, speaks into it, or sends translated audio to the other attendees. You can only run it on a separate device that hears your speaker, which adds echo and keeps the translation private to you.
Is ChatGPT record mode a live translator?
No. Record mode, available in the macOS desktop app for some plans, records and transcribes a meeting so that ChatGPT can summarize it afterwards. It does not translate for the other attendees during the call.
What can I use instead of ChatGPT for a video call?
Three routes exist: the platform's own translation (Meet speech translation, a Teams Interpreter agent, Zoom Voice Translator), each limited by plan and language list, or a bot such as Akume that joins as a participant. Akume shows captions in the call and plays spoken translation to anyone who opens a listener link in a browser.
Do Copilot and Gemini translate calls any better?
Their chat assistants work like ChatGPT: they hear what their own microphone hears. The call-level features are separate products, such as the Teams Interpreter agent and Gemini-powered speech translation in Meet, and both depend on your plan.
