English to Italian Voice Translator for Live Calls

English to Italian voice translator for Zoom, Meet and Teams: what platforms support real-time speech translation, and what Italian speakers need to know.

In short

  • For a live Italian-English call, use the platform's own translation if your plan and language pair are covered; otherwise a translator bot that joins the meeting.
  • As of October 2026, Google Meet and Teams support Italian-English speech translation on select plans, and Zoom's voice translation does not yet include Italian.
  • Italian adds its own traps: Lei versus tu, false friends such as fattoria and libreria, and long subordinate clauses.

To translate English to Italian live on a video call, the quickest route is whatever your meeting platform already offers for the pair, and if it doesn't cover you, a translator bot that joins the meeting as a participant, speaks each side's words in the other language and shows captions in the call. As of October 2026 the platforms differ more than most people expect, and Italian has traps of its own that a good setup should survive.

What Zoom, Meet and Teams support for Italian today

The picture changes quickly, so check the linked pages before you promise anything to a client. Status as of October 2026:

Platform Italian-English spoken translation Caption translation Catch
Google Meet Yes, English with Italian in both directions (Google) Separate feature Select Workspace and Google AI plans only; one language pair active per meeting
Microsoft Teams Yes, Interpreter supports Italian and English (Microsoft) Separate feature Needs a Microsoft 365 Copilot license for the person using it
Zoom Not yet: Zoom's voice translation launched with English, Chinese, Spanish, French and Japanese, with Italian planned for later in 2026 (Zoom) Italian and English are on the translated-captions list (Zoom) Captions only, no spoken output

Two practical readings of that table. If your counterpart is on a plan that includes Meet's or Teams' own translation, use it. If you host on Zoom, or the other side is on a plan without these features, native tools leave you with captions at best, and that is where an in-call bot helps.

Phone app, platform feature or in-call bot

Phone app Platform's own feature In-call bot (Akume)
Where it works Any conversation, one device passed between two people Only inside that platform Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Zoom
Who needs what Everyone shares one phone Each user needs an eligible plan One person pastes the meeting link; the others need nothing
What others see Nothing shared in the call Depends on the platform Captions on the translator's tile inside the call
Listening in your language On the phone speaker Per user setting Each person opens a listener link and hears their own language
Not suited to Calls with three or more people, or screen sharing Mixed platforms WhatsApp, phone calls, Zoom Webinar

Akume joins the meeting as a participant, translates each speaker, shows live captions on its tile and gives listeners one link; a session runs 2 to 10 languages at once, up to 500 listener connections. It does not cover WhatsApp calls or ordinary phone lines.

Where Italian trips up a live translation

Knowing the pair's weak spots lets you speak so the translation holds.

Lei and tu. Italian business calls often open with Lei, the formal you. English has one "you", so the register vanishes in translation. Signal it yourself with titles and a polite opening (Gentile Dottor Brown, buongiorno); the English side will not hear the formality, but your tone stays correct for your own side.

False friends that survive into captions. Fattoria is a farm, not a factory (that is fabbrica). Libreria is a bookshop, not a library (biblioteca). Pretendere means to demand or expect, not to pretend (fingere). Eventualmente means possibly, not eventually, and attualmente means currently, not actually. If a caption reads "we demand a discount" when you meant "we expect one", this is why. Read captions for these words and rephrase on the spot.

Long subordinate clauses. Italian is comfortable with a sentence that holds three or four nested clauses before the verb arrives. A live translator has to wait for that verb, so the English lags and may reorder. Break long thoughts into two sentences and finish each with its verb.

Meaning carried by gesture. A raised palm, a pinched-finger shrug, a tilted head: on a video call these do real work, and on an audio-only translation they disappear. If a gesture carries your message, say it too: "I am not sure we can accept that" beats a shrug.

Two calls where this matters

Trade fair follow-up. You met a buyer at a fair in New York or Milan and agreed to talk in six weeks. Quality standards, delivery terms and certifications get named precisely on this call, and one wrong word is a contract problem. Run it in Meet, Teams or Zoom with captions visible, and keep a short glossary of your product terms to repeat unchanged.

Family across continents. Relatives who emigrated to Australia and relatives in Puglia often share a language only partly: the older generation speaks Italian, the grandchildren English. One call, one link, and everyone follows in their own language, including anyone who joins from a phone browser.

Buyer from New YorkSounds good. Can you send the quality certificates before then?Va bene. Può inviarci prima i certificati di qualità?
Olive oil producer from PugliaCerto, ve li mandiamo domani insieme alla scheda tecnica.Of course, we will send them tomorrow along with the spec sheet.
Buyer from New YorkPerfect, then we will confirm on Friday.Perfetto, allora confermiamo venerdì.

For exporters like Puglia's olive oil producers, translating contract discussions with international buyers in real time means quality standards and delivery terms must come through clearly in both languages. Here's what that looks like in a live call.

Note how the Italian puts the condition in the middle and the New York reference at the very end; the English keeps the condition up front.

Questions and answers

Can one call translate Italian and English in both directions at once?

Yes. Each speaker is translated into the other's language, so the Italian speaker and the English speaker both hear and read their own language in the same call.

Does the translator keep a recording of my call?

Audio is translated as it arrives and no recording is kept once the call ends. Captions stay in your account and support removes them on request. On Zoom the host must allow recording in meeting permissions when the translator joins, as required by Zoom's API; Akume does not store that recording.

Can listeners follow without installing anything?

Yes. You share one listener link, up to 500 listener connections per session, and each person opens it in a browser and picks their language. No account and no install.

Does it work for WhatsApp or phone calls?

No. The Akume translator joins Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and Zoom meetings. For WhatsApp or a plain phone call, move the conversation to a meeting link.

Does it work in Zoom Webinar?

No. Zoom Webinar is not supported. Run the event as an ordinary Zoom meeting instead.
