Discord voice translator: text bots, voice bots and what to use when

Discord translator bots translate text, not voice. Learn what exists, how to set up by language, and when to move your call to Meet or Zoom.

In short

  • A Discord translator bot translates typed messages. Live voice translation inside a Discord voice channel needs a separate voice bot or a desktop app that captures the audio on your computer.
  • Akume does not join Discord voice channels. For an important multilingual call, post a Google Meet, Microsoft Teams or Zoom link in Discord and run the call there.
  • Best split for a community: a text bot with one role and channel per language for daily chat, a meeting link for the calls that matter.

A Discord translator bot translates typed messages, not speech. If you want a Discord voice translator that works while people talk, you have three options: a community voice bot, a desktop app that captions the audio on your own computer, or moving the call to Google Meet, Microsoft Teams or Zoom. Akume is the third kind: it does not join Discord voice channels, so for a call that matters you post a meeting link in Discord and talk there.

Text bots, voice bots, desktop apps: what exists in October 2026

Option What it handles Where it falls short
Text translator bot Messages in text channels, often by slash command, flag-emoji reaction or automatic channel translation Hears nothing in voice channels
Voice translation bot Listings such as NeuroVox describe joining a voice channel, listening and speaking the translation Must support Discord's DAVE encryption; quality and uptime vary by bot
Desktop caption app Captures Discord audio on your computer and shows translated captions, as JotMe describes Works for the person running it; others in the channel do not hear a translation
Meet, Teams or Zoom call with Akume Spoken translation and live captions for everyone in the meeting Not Discord: the call moves to a meeting link

One fact explains why voice bots are harder than text bots. Since March 2026, Discord encrypts every voice and video call end to end by default, except Stage channels, and apps without support for its DAVE protocol can no longer take part in calls. A bot that listens to your channel has to implement that protocol and then run speech recognition and translation on top of it. Text messages are not encrypted this way, which is one reason text bots are simple and common.

Discord itself has no built-in message translation that we could find; users still ask for it on the official feedback pages. Everything below is third-party.

Set up a text translation bot with one role per language

This setup suits a server with members in three or four languages. It takes about twenty minutes.

  1. Pick a bot. Compare feature lists on a directory such as top.gg. Look for automatic translation between linked channels, slash commands, and a translate-on-reaction option. Check what the free plan limits, because some bots cap AI translations per month.
  2. Invite it. You need the Manage Server permission. Grant only what the bot asks for, typically View Channel, Send Messages and Read Message History. Bots that repost messages under the author's name usually also need Manage Webhooks.
  3. Create a role per language. For example Lang: English, Lang: Japanese, Lang: Portuguese. Enable a role picker or ask members to choose in a short onboarding message.
  4. Create a channel per language, plus a shared lobby. Make #general-en, #general-ja, #general-pt, each visible to its role. Link them in the bot so that a message in one appears translated in the others.
  5. Keep sensitive channels out. Leave moderation logs, staff chat and anything with personal data unlinked.
  6. Test with a native speaker per language. Post a sentence with slang and one with a game term. Machine translation stumbles on names, jargon and sarcasm, so add a glossary command or a pinned list of terms that must stay untranslated if your bot supports one.

Who uses which setup

  • International gaming clans. Text translation for daily banter and strategy notes. Voice stays in the game language or in a call where someone interprets. A voice bot is fine for casual raids, but not for an officer meeting.
  • Open-source communities. Text bot in support and contributor channels. For governance calls or maintainer syncs, host a Meet or Zoom meeting and post the link and agenda in Discord.
  • Creator collabs. Quick planning in text. For the recording or the sponsor call, use a meeting link where captions are saved in your account afterwards.

When to leave Discord for the call

Move the call if a mistake would cost you something: a playtest where bug reports must be understood exactly, a sponsor negotiation, a contributor dispute. The pattern is simple.

  1. Post the Meet, Teams or Zoom link in Discord with the time in each language.
  2. Paste the same link into Akume. It joins as a participant, shows live captions in the call, and translates each speaker.
  3. People who only want to listen open the listener link in a browser, with no account or install, and hear the call in their language.

Akume covers 60+ language variants and 2 to 10 languages in one meeting. See how video call translation works for the details, Zoom's built-in live translation if your meeting is on Zoom, or phone call translation if some participants dial in. If your players are on Samsung phones, Samsung Live Translate is a separate on-device tool for a different job.

How a translated call goes

you moderate an indie game community. A Japanese tester and an American tester are about to join a Discord playtest, and you want to move the debrief to a meeting link so nothing is lost in translation.

The best split for your community

A voice bot and a desktop captioner are different products with different limits: one serves the whole channel, the other serves a single listener. For most communities, the practical answer is a split: a text bot for everyday chat, a meeting link for the calls that matter.

Questions and answers

Can a Discord bot translate voice chat?

Some community-made voice bots claim to, and desktop apps can caption Discord audio by capturing it on your computer. The widely used translator bots, however, only handle text. Since March 2026 every Discord voice call is end-to-end encrypted, so any bot that joins a voice channel must support Discord's DAVE protocol. Treat voice bots as experimental for anything important.

Does Akume work inside a Discord voice channel?

No. Akume joins Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and Zoom calls from a meeting link. For an important call, post the meeting link in Discord and run the call there.

Does Discord have built-in message translation?

As far as we could find in October 2026, no official built-in translation exists. Users have asked for it on Discord's feedback pages, and servers rely on third-party bots.

How do I set up translation for several languages in one server?

Create one role and one channel per language, add a shared lobby channel, and configure your translator bot to translate between the language channels. Members pick their role and read the server in their own language.

Are voice channels covered by Discord's encryption?

Yes. Discord states that every voice and video call, except Stage channels, uses end-to-end encryption by default. Text messages are not end-to-end encrypted.
