Google Meet Translation: What Works on Your Account

Translated captions, Gemini speech translation or a translator bot: what your Google Meet account can actually do, with plans, language pairs and devices.

In short

  • Meet offers translated captions (text, from Workspace Business Standard), Gemini speech translation (spoken translation, English paired with six languages, one pair per meeting) and, outside Google, a translator bot that joins the call.
  • Google's own tools are tied to your plan, to English as one side of every pair, and to each participant's settings. Spanish to Portuguese, for example, is not a Gemini pair.
  • A translator bot such as Akume connects through the meeting link, covers 65+ language variants and lets each listener follow the call in their own language through a listener link.

Google Meet translation comes in three forms: translated captions (text on screen), Gemini speech translation (the translation is spoken aloud) and a translator bot that joins the call from outside Google. The first two depend on your Google plan and always involve English; the bot works from the meeting link. The facts below were checked against Google's help pages in October 2026.

The three ways to translate a Google Meet call

Translated captions show what the speaker says as text in the language you choose. Each participant picks their own caption language in the captions settings. Google lists Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus, plus Google AI Pro for Education, and states that personal accounts are not supported. The help page lists more than 90 languages.

Gemini speech translation speaks the translation in a synthetic voice a few seconds after the speaker. Google made it generally available on January 27, 2026 and began rolling it out in the mobile apps in April 2026. It translates between English and French, German, Hindi, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish.

A translator bot is a separate participant. You paste the meeting link, the host admits it, and it translates every person who speaks. It does not depend on Google plans and speaks the translation for any pair among its languages, with or without English.

What each option requires (October 2026)

Translated captions Gemini speech translation Translator bot (Akume)
Output Text Voice Voice and live captions
Plan Workspace Business or Enterprise, Standard and up; Google AI Pro for Education Workspace Business or Enterprise (Standard and Plus), Frontline Plus, Google AI Pro and Ultra, AI Pro for Education Any meeting you can invite a participant to
Personal Gmail Not supported Only with Google AI Pro or Ultra Joins with the meeting link
Language pairs 90+ languages English with French, German, Hindi, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish 65 language variants, 2 to 10 in one call
Pairs per meeting Each person chooses their own One pair for everyone Up to 10 languages at once
Phone Google's help includes Android and iOS steps Gradual rollout since April 2026 The listener link opens in a browser
Who turns it on Each participant One eligible user; then every participant must allow it The host admits the bot
Limits Gradual rollout, so it may not appear yet 90 minutes per meeting; not in live streams or recordings Listener links: up to 500 connections per session

Two details cause most of the confusion. With speech translation, voices are translated only for participants who allow it in their own settings, so a guest who ignores the prompt gets no translation. And an admin can switch the feature off for an organizational unit, so an eligible plan does not guarantee that the option appears in your Meet.

  • Everyone is comfortable with English, and your plan is eligible: translated captions are the quickest route. Open the captions menu and pick a language.
  • You need to hear the translation and one of the languages is English: Gemini speech translation, if your plan, your admin and each participant's settings allow it. Keep the 90-minute limit per meeting in mind.
  • Neither language is English, or you have three languages: Google's voice pairs always include English and one pair serves the whole meeting. Portuguese with Spanish, or a call with Portuguese, Spanish and English at once, needs text captions or a bot.
  • Your guests use personal accounts, or they are at a school without these plans: a bot does not depend on what Google has switched on for each person.

A note for Brazil and Latin America

Many schools, universities and small agencies in Brazil and across Latin America run their calls on Meet, and they often mix Portuguese, Spanish and English. An exchange between two universities, one in Portuguese and one in Spanish, is the textbook case where Gemini speech translation does not help, because neither language is English. A small agency pitching to clients in three countries runs into the same single-pair limit. Teachers and coordinators also tend to use education accounts whose features are decided by the school's admin, so a tool that does not depend on those settings is easier to plan around. Check which plan your institution really has before you rely on a built-in feature.

How to add a translator bot to Google Meet

  1. Create or open the meeting and copy the meeting link.
  2. Paste the link into Akume and choose the languages of the call, from 2 to 10.
  3. Akume joins as a participant. If you are the host, admit it when it asks to join.
  4. Captions start appearing in the Akume panel inside the call.
  5. Copy the listener link and send it to the people who need the translation.
  6. Each listener opens the link in a browser, with no account and no install, and hears the call in their own language.

Audio is translated as it arrives and no recording is kept when the call ends. Captions stay in your Akume account and support deletes them if you ask. Google Meet's own recording stays under your control as the host.

Questions and answers

Does Google Meet offer live translation?

Yes, in two forms. Translated captions show text in your language on eligible Workspace plans. Gemini speech translation speaks the translation aloud on eligible Workspace and Google AI plans, for English paired with French, German, Hindi, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish.

Can I use Google Meet translation with a free Gmail account?

Translated captions are not available on personal accounts. Speech translation reaches personal accounts only through a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription. Same-language captions work for everyone.

Does Gemini speech translation work on a phone?

Google began rolling it out in the Android and iOS apps in April 2026, in stages. Check whether the speech translation option appears in your own app, because availability varies by account.

Can Meet translate Spanish to Portuguese directly?

Not with Gemini speech translation, whose pairs all include English. Translated captions can cover the pair as text. A translator bot can cover it with spoken translation.

Does a translator bot record my Google Meet?

Akume keeps no recording after the call. Google Meet's own recording is a separate feature that you control as the host.
