LINE app translation: chat accounts, and how to add live translation to calls

LINE has no live translation in voice or video calls. See how chat translation accounts work, and get live translation by moving the call to Meet or Zoom.

In short

  • LINE has no live translation inside its voice or video calls. Translation accounts only handle text you send to them.
  • For a live translated conversation, share a Meet or Zoom link in the LINE chat and run an in-call translator there.
  • Use chat translation for messages, a phone app for a face-to-face moment, and an in-call bot for meetings with more than one speaker.

LINE app translation is limited to text chats via official accounts, but LINE calls have no built-in live translation feature. To translate a conversation as it happens, send a Google Meet or Zoom link in your LINE chat and run an in-call translator there. The rest of this guide covers chat translation, the call workaround, and which tool fits which situation.

Summary

  • Text: translation accounts and bots translate what you send to them. Nothing is translated automatically across your other chats.
  • Calls: LINE voice and video calls have no live translation. Move the call to Meet or Zoom.
  • Choosing: chat translation for messages, a phone app for a quick face-to-face exchange, an in-call bot when several people speak.

Translating LINE chats with a translation account

Several translation accounts and bots exist in LINE, including official accounts aimed at users in Taiwan and Japan. Their names and handles change, so this walkthrough avoids pinning one.

  1. Open Add friends and choose Official Accounts.
  2. Search for "translate", "翻譯" (Traditional Chinese) or "翻訳" (Japanese).
  3. Add an account that shows the verified badge, and read its description for supported languages.
  4. Send it the text you want translated in a one-to-one chat with the account.
  5. Copy the reply and paste it into your conversation with the other person.

This suits a menu question or a delivery date. It is poor for back-and-forth, because every sentence takes a trip out of the conversation and back.

Voice and video calls: the honest situation

According to LINE Help Center documentation, there is no translation inside voice or video calls, and there is no caption feature for LINE calls. Translation in LINE means text sent to an account, nothing more.

The workaround, step by step:

  1. Create a meeting in Google Meet or Zoom and copy the link.
  2. Paste it into the LINE chat and tell the other person you are switching.
  3. Both of you open the link; a browser is enough for Meet.
  4. Add the translation layer in the meeting.

For step 4 you have two kinds of options. Google Meet offers translated captions, but Google limits them to certain Workspace editions, so check Google's help page before relying on it. An in-call bot such as Akume joins as a participant in Meet, Teams or Zoom and provides live captions plus spoken translation. It covers 60+ languages, and a single meeting runs 2 to 10 of them at once, so a family call or a three-country supplier meeting works the same way. The video-call side of this is covered in the video call translator guide.

LINE chat translation vs phone apps vs an in-call bot

LINE chat translation Phone translation app In-call bot (Meet, Zoom)
Works during a call No Yes, held between two people Yes
Speakers One message at a time Two, taking turns Several, each translated
Everyone sees captions No No Yes
Where it runs Inside LINE On one phone Inside the meeting
Best for Short messages A quick exchange in person Scheduled calls

For a phone-based approach see the phone call translator guide, and for what phones do on their own see Samsung Live Translate. If your group lives on Discord rather than LINE, the Discord voice translator guide applies the same idea to voice channels.

Two scenarios

Taiwanese family with relatives in Japan

A grandmother in Taipei keeps a LINE group with cousins in Nagano. Daily photos and short notes go through a translation account. For the monthly video call, one cousin posts a Zoom link in the group, and everyone joins with captions in their own language. Nobody needs to install anything, since attendees can open the link in a browser.

Small exporter and a buyer abroad

An exporter in Taichung agrees quantities with a buyer over LINE messages. The details that affect money, such as specs and delivery terms, get discussed on a scheduled Meet call with translation running, then confirmed in writing in LINE. The call settles the question; the chat keeps the record.

How a translated call goes

A Taipei grandmother and her cousin in Nagano move a LINE chat to a Meet call. Each line is shown in Traditional Chinese and Japanese.

Try it before a real call

Akume's live demo lets you hear spoken translation and captions on a short call, so you can judge latency and accuracy for your language pair before sharing a link with a partner or relative.

Questions and answers

Does LINE have live translation in voice or video calls?

No. LINE's help center documents no translation inside calls. Translation in LINE is text only, through translation accounts or bots you message. For a live translated call, move the conversation to a Meet or Zoom link.

How do I add a translation account in LINE?

Open the Add friends screen, choose Official Accounts, search for a word like translate (in Traditional Chinese, 翻譯; in Japanese, 翻訳), and add an account that carries the verified badge. Account names and handles change, so check the badge instead of trusting a handle copied from a blog post.

Can I translate a LINE video call?

Not inside LINE. Paste a Meet or Zoom link into the LINE chat, join it from there, and use an in-call translator that provides captions and spoken translation.

Do I need a paid Google plan for translated captions in Meet?

Meet's own translated captions are limited to certain Google Workspace editions, per Google's help page. An in-call translator bot such as Akume does not depend on the Workspace edition.

Does Akume join LINE calls?

No. Akume joins Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and Zoom calls. LINE is where you share the link.
